Beautiful Oil on Panel. Charles-Louis Bellis (Brussels, 1837 – Heist,?) Was a Belgian painter and water colorist of realism.

He was the brother of painter Hubert Bellis (1831-1902). From 1850-1857 he received training as a decorative painter at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. There he was a fellow student of, among others, the painters Guillaume Vogels and Guillaume Lanneau. Together with his brother Hubert he founded in 1857 a case in decorative painting at Brandhoutkaai 31 in Brussels. In the attic of this house he and his brother gave a classical training to Guillaume Vogels.

His artistic creativity came later. He mainly painted navies, but also landscapes. In 1877 he became a member of the artists’ association “La Chrysalide”.

Around 1886 he lived in Lissewege, and later in Heist. There he opened the establishment “Kursaal”.

Charles-Louis Bellis was co-founder of the Cercle des Beaux-Arts d’Ostende in 1894, together with, among others, James Ensor, Emile Spilliaert, Felix Buelens, Achille Vlaminck, Henri Permeke, Albert Baertsoen, Frantz Charlet, Auguste Musin, Marie Van Halme -Lévy and Marthe Vlaminck-Dufour, all visual artists. The association organized art salons in Ostend in 1894 and 1895. The initiative was terminated in 1896.

After his death (where and when is not known) his widow Caroline Van Dorpe still operated a hotel in Heist. She lived there with her two children in the Sasstraat. In 1902 she moved to Schaerbeek.
