Nicolas Markovitch A. Marc (1894 – 1964) Litho Stehli Freres

He lived and worked, among others, in France and was best known for his architectural paintings of urban buildings, cathedrals and monuments, and for landscape paintings in various countries. He also made many scenes in the US, including in New York City.

He was one of the best watercolor painters of his time, painted, among other things, watercolor illustrations for div. books between the end of 1920 and early ’40s. He also worked a lot for Stehli Brothers in Switzerland. They published series of watercolor paintings of him, in div. sizes printed.
Markovitch signed his original work with his own name. The reproduction lithographs under pseudonym (A.) Marc, botanical lithographs with J (ean) Philippe.

The Stehli lithographs were printed on good litho paper, with rough edges, which made them look like original watercolors. They were also printed with – for that time – very high lithographic quality. The printing quality was so high that these prints were often assessed as original work.

The work offered is therefore of the last category, including rough edges. Signed in the lower left “Marc”, bottom right the marks of Stehli Freres S.A, Zurich (stZf)
