“The Journal des Dames et des Modes is one of the first fashion journals illustrated in French, founded in 1797 by the bookseller Sellèque, taken over in 1801 by Pierre Antoine Leboux of Mésangère and disappeared in 1839. This journal was published under several names: Journal des Dames, Costumes Parisien, Journal des modes, Journal de la Mésangère and finally Gazette des Salons for his latest release”
During the early 19th century fashion publications began to move away from plates of historical costumes to fashion plates of the time, which highlighted the fashionable garments of present times.
Journal des Dames was one of the periodicals that shifted from costume to fashion, but also survived the turn of the century unlike many others of this period. It was also published in a German edition in Frankfurt from 1799 to 1848. The plates included in the magazine were all titled “Costumes Parisiens” and numbered consecutively between 1797 and 1839.
